The Hand is Pinker than the Eye, Jonathan Hopson Gallery, 2024

The Hand is Pinker than the Eye places paintings alongside fragments of violet foamular whose surfaces record dents, scratches, and incidental impressions from studio use. The exhibition considers what painting carries as a material, its associations with intention, authorship, and mark, alongside surfaces that simply accumulate contact. The show's title references the pink panther diamond, a gemstone whose value comes from a flaw that, when held to the light, resembles a leaping panther.
